[ SOURCE: http://www.secureroot.com/security/advisories/9693907472.html ] -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ________________________________________________________________________ Linux-Mandrake Security Update Advisory ________________________________________________________________________ Package name: mod_php3 Date: September 13th, 2000 Advisory ID: MDKSA-2000:048 Affected versions: 6.1, 7.0, 7.1 ________________________________________________________________________ Problem Description: A problem exists with PHP3 and PHP4 scripts regarding RFC 1867-based file uploads. PHP saves uploaded files in a temporary directory on the server, using a temporary name that is referenced as the variable $FOO where "FOO" is the name of the file input tag in the submitted form. Many PHP scripts process $FOO without taking measures to ensure that it is in fact a file that resides in the temporary directory. Because of this, it is possible for a remote attacker to supply an arbitrary file name as the value for $FOO by submitting a standard form input tag by that name, and thus cause the PHP script to process arbitrary files. The vulnerability exists in various scripts, and not necessarily with PHP itself, as the script determines what actions to perform on the uploaded file. The new versions of both PHP3 and PHP4 make it easier to secure scripts from this particular vulnerability. They include a new function that makes it easy to determine whether a certain filename is a temporary uploaded file or not: /* Text whether a file is an uploaded file or not */ is_uploaded_file($path); While there is no security vulnerability with PHP3 and PHP4, this upgrade is offered as a convenience because it includes the above illustrated method of file testing. ________________________________________________________________________ Please verify these md5 checksums of the updates prior to upgrading to ensure the integrity of the downloaded package. You can do this by running the md5sum program on the downloaded package by using "md5sum package.rpm". If you want to upgrade manually, download the updated package from one of our FTP server mirrors and uprade with "rpm -Uvh package_name". You can download the updates directly from: ftp://ftp.linux.tucows.com/pub/distributions/Mandrake/Mandrake/updates ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrake/updates Or try one of the other mirrors listed at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3. Updated packages are available in the "updates/[ver]/RPMS/" directory. For example, if you are looking for an updated RPM package for Linux-Mandrake 7.1, look for it in "updates/7.1/RPMS/". Updated source RPMs are available as well, but you generally do not need to download them. Please be aware that sometimes it takes the mirrors a few hours to update, so if you want an immediate upgrade, please use one of the two above-listed mirrors.
