CVE-2022-0492: Linux kernel cgroups v1 release_agent privilege escalation
Exploited in the wild High 7.8 EPSS 5.5% Linux kernel
cgroup_release_agent_write() in kernel/cgroup/cgroup-v1.c did not require the needed capabilities before letting a process set the cgroups v1 release_agent program. Under certain circumstances, for example inside a container, a process can use this to escalate privileges and bypass namespace isolation (Red Hat); a Docker container-escape exploit is public. Fixed in Linux 5.17 and stable 4.9.301, 4.14.266, 4.19.229, 5.4.177, 5.10.97, 5.15.20 and 5.16.6. CISA added it to KEV on 2 June 2026.

What to do now
- Check whether you run Linux kernel and which version (commands below).
- Install the fixed version for your system: see “Patch it” below.
- Reboot into the updated kernel. Live patches were issued in 2022: Ubuntu Livepatch LSN-0085-1 and LSN-0086-1; Red Hat kpatch-patch for RHEL 7.9 (RHSA-2022:4655), 8.5 (RHSA-2022:0849) and older EUS streams; SUSE live patches for SLES 12 SP4/SP5 and 15 GA-SP3.
- If you cannot patch today, apply the temporary mitigation below and patch as soon as possible.
- Because this flaw is being exploited, also check the server for signs of compromise.

If you cannot patch yet
- Red Hat says no mitigation meets its criteria, but notes SELinux in enforcing mode blocks this escape on OpenShift nodes and Red Hat Virtualization hosts; keep SELinux enforcing.
CISA required action: Apply mitigations per vendor instructions, follow applicable BOD 22-01 guidance for cloud services, or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.
This vulnerability affects a common open-source component, third-party library, or a protocol used by different products. Please check with specific vendors for information on patching status.
