CVE-2023-0386: Linux kernel OverlayFS setuid copy-up privilege escalation

Exploited in the wild High 7.8 EPSS 7.9% Linux kernel

OverlayFS mishandles uid mapping when a capable or setuid file is copied from a nosuid mount into another mount, letting a local user run that file with elevated rights and become root. Fixed upstream in 6.2 (backported to 6.1.9 and 5.15.91); CISA added it to KEV on 17 June 2025.

What to do now

  1. Check whether you run Linux kernel and which version (commands below).
  2. Install the fixed version for your system: see “Patch it” below.
  3. Reboot into the fixed kernel. Ubuntu Livepatch (LSN-0095-1) and Red Hat kpatch (RHSA-2023:1659 for RHEL 8, RHSA-2023:1681 for RHEL 9) cover it without a reboot.
  4. If you cannot patch today, apply the temporary mitigation below and patch as soon as possible.
  5. Because this flaw is being exploited, also check the server for signs of compromise.
