CVE-2025-14847: MongoDB Server zlib header length confusion leaks heap memory

Exploited in the wild High 8.7 EPSS 83.2% MongoDB Server

Mismatched length fields in zlib-compressed wire protocol headers let an unauthenticated client make MongoDB Server return uninitialized heap memory, which can contain data and secrets. Every server that accepts zlib compression over the network is exposed, across all versions back to 3.6. MongoDB fixed it in 8.2.3, 8.0.17, 7.0.28, 6.0.27, 5.0.32 and 4.4.30 (no fix for 4.2, 4.0 or 3.6); CISA added it to KEV on 29 December 2025.

What to do now

  1. Check whether you run MongoDB Server and which version (commands below).
  2. Install the fixed version for your system: see “Patch it” below.
  3. Restart mongod and mongos on every node (rolling restart for replica sets and sharded clusters).
  4. If you cannot patch today, apply the temporary mitigation below and patch as soon as possible.
  5. Because this flaw is being exploited, also check the server for signs of compromise.

Patch it

Use the commands for your system. Distribution packages often keep an older version number with the fix backported, so compare with the fixed package versions in the table below, not only with the upstream version.

Debian
# MongoDB's own apt repository
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --only-upgrade mongodb-org
sudo systemctl restart mongod
Ubuntu
# MongoDB's own apt repository
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --only-upgrade mongodb-org
sudo systemctl restart mongod
RHEL, AlmaLinux, Rocky, Oracle
# MongoDB's own yum repository
sudo dnf upgrade 'mongodb-org*'
sudo systemctl restart mongod
