CVE-2025-38352: Linux kernel posix-cpu-timers race condition (local privilege escalation)
Exploited in the wild High 7.8 EPSS 1.4% Linux kernel
A race between handle_posix_cpu_timers() and posix_cpu_timer_del() lets a timer run against a task that is already being reaped, a time-of-check/time-of-use race that a local user can exploit with high impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability (CVSS 7.8). Kernels built with CONFIG_POSIX_CPU_TIMERS_TASK_WORK=y do not need the fix, according to the kernel CVE record. Google's September 2025 Android bulletin reported limited, targeted exploitation; CISA added it to KEV on 4 September 2025.

What to do now
- Check whether you run Linux kernel and which version (commands below).
- Install the fixed version for your system: see “Patch it” below.
- Reboot into the fixed kernel. Red Hat ships kpatch updates (RHSA-2025:15921 for RHEL 8, RHSA-2025:15798 for RHEL 9) and Ubuntu Livepatch covers it (LSN-0116-1).
- If you cannot patch today, apply the temporary mitigation below and patch as soon as possible.
- Because this flaw is being exploited, also check the server for signs of compromise.

Am I affected?
uname -r
grep CONFIG_POSIX_CPU_TIMERS_TASK_WORK /boot/config-$(uname -r) # =y means the race is not reachable

Use the commands for your system. Distribution packages often keep an older version number with the fix backported, so compare with the fixed package versions in the table below, not only with the upstream version.
